I’d be terrified if this were my tax professional. He clearly doesn’t understand anything. Audits are expensive. The IRS doesn’t pay your fees. You’re on the hook.

Yup. You have to prove with mountains of meticulous paperwork that you didn't do anything wrong. If you don't do that in a short amount of time, then the government thugs comes after you. This is an insidious weapon which will be used against political opponents; precious time and money will be wasted. People will have to spend thousands of dollars to prove their innocence. The buffoon who says, "don't cheat on taxes!" doesn't get that the, dragged out, process is the punishment.
