The main reason the Lord of the Rings works is because it was shot all at once. Of course, Tolkien's writing doesn't hurt either.

I would have put Star Treks 1 and 3 a lot lower. A LOT lower. ST:TMP was a redo of the original ep "Nomad" which all of us nerds who saw it in the theater realized right away - I remember a fellow movie-goer's audible annoyance. Search for Spock was just stupid, IMO. Hokey. OTOH, I don't know if Wrath of Khan was really that great, or if it's just that I'd watch Ricardo Montalban read the phone book.

I've never watched a Star Trek movie or TV episode. I just know, from a friend, that Romulans are not cool.
