The Quad Can Wait

Hunh. I was thinking of getting an entirely new desktop system but after looking at the high prices of the Core i7 setup, I settled for a single-component upgrade.

Something like this could make a great desktop. Not for gaming, per se, but for $300 you could build a dual core system based around the newest Intel Atom CPU, 2GB of RAM and a big chunk of flash memory for your regular storage.

$300 buys a good system today. (Especially RAM which is dirt cheap. Some stores in Canada are selling 2GB of DDR2 for $15! Exactly two years ago, that stuff went for $280 minimum.) Though, the Intel Atom is not for me. I had a 2GHz Core 2 Duo and it was sometimes choking on high definition video. I got a 3Ghz Penryn and my problem is solved.
I also deal with a lot of photos and I've definitely seen a lot of smoothness with the 3Ghz monster. The Atom wouldn't handle that well either.
