Dear Isaac:
You say ‘awe inspiring.’ I say ‘scares the Hell out of me.’ We get such displays of Heavenly pyrotechnics regularly in Oklahoma, usually with an accompanying tornado or two. And too many times I have been in a tent in some jungle when lightning burst upon my little camp. Scared the Hell out of me.

There was a terrible thunderstorm three years ago in my local area. The lightning got closer and closer to my residence and I got closer and closer to the window to view the awesome spectacle.
Then a blinding bolt landed no more than 250 meters outside in front of me. My instant thought, "Okay, time to back off." I slowly walked away from the window.
Still, it looks cool ... in photos.

One year when I was in the field with the military, another regiment had an artillery crew get zapped by lighting while I happened to be near them. Yeah, lighting strikes look purdy from a distance, but they scare the living crap out of you when they hit close by. We thought for sure that two of the guys manning the gun were dead, but they turned out to be fine - just some burns and shock, but no serious damage. Seeing them like that - muddy, burnt, and dazed - in retrospect seems comical, like something out of a cartoon, but at the time everyone was just ecstatic that they survived.
