Hazy on Peace

Times Online via Gateway Pundit:

Homosexuals deserve to be executed or tortured and possibly both, an Iranian leader told British MPs during a private meeting at a peace conference, The Times has learnt.

Mohsen Yahyavi is the highest-ranked politician to admit that Iran believes in the death penalty for homosexuality after a spate of reports that gay youths were being hanged.

Another horror:

The latest row involves a woman hanged this June in the town of Gorgan after becoming pregnant by her brother. He was absolved after expressing his remorse.

From earlier this year:

Minutes taken by an official describe a meeting between British and Iranian MPs at the Inter-Parliamentary Union, a peace body, in May. When the Britons raised the hangings of Asqari and Marhouni, the leader of the Iranian delegation, Mr Yahyavi, a member of his parliament’s energy committee, was unflinching. He “explained that according to Islam gays and lesbianism were not permitted”, the record states. “He said that if homosexual activity is in private there is no problem, but those in overt activity should be executed [he initially said tortured but changed it to executed]. He argued that homosexuality is against human nature and that humans are here to reproduce. Homosexuals do not reproduce.”

Marisol:

So it's fine as long as you don't get caught, but if you do, you die a horrible death. There's some forward-thinking morality.

Jihadists Running Out of Ammo

Strategy Page via One Hand Clapping:

The various terrorist groups in Iraq, especially the Sunni Arabs and al Qaeda, appear to be having supply problems. In a word, the enemy is running out of ammunition. Their logistical "tail" is being chopped to bits. Captured documents and prisoner interrogations mention these shortages.

It's like the mini version of the Battle of the Atlantic.

Embrace Us ... or Else II

Classical Liberal provided a link to Samizdata in the comments:

Don't worry, dear, what we are about to do to you is just a metaphor.

Go view the photo for the context.

More from Perry de Havilland:

[...] when a man who cannot bring himself to unequivocally condemn such barbarity tells us that we have anything whatsoever to learn from what he sees as Islam, it would be fair to say "I do not think so".

Indeed.

Embrace Us ... or Else

The Telegraph via Pedestrian Infidel:

Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari, the leader of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), thinks the Government is stoking the tension.

"There is a disproportionate amount of discussion surrounding us," he says. "The air is thick with suspicion and unease. It is not good for the Muslim community, it is not good for society."

Then he vomits out this:

Britain must, he warns, beware of becoming like Nazi Germany.

Pop quiz: Who made up the 13th SS Handzar Division?

Answer here.

"I think it is creating a scare in the community and wider society. It probably helps some people who try to recruit the young to terrorism. Muslim young people are as vulnerable as any others. Under this climate of fear they will begin to feel victimised."

Of course. This vile British fear is creating the terrorists from the Muslim communities. If only the Brits were to embrace the evil sharia cute Muslims, the violence would go away.

His passion is to integrate Muslim and British cultures - he says integration must go both ways.

"Everybody can learn from everyone. Some of the Muslim principles can help social cohesion - family, marriage, raising children with boundaries, giving to the poor, not being too greedy."

British people could, in his view, benefit from arranged marriages. "I prefer to call them assisted marriages," he says.

Perhaps the Muslims can learn to not marry their cousins.

Is stoning ever justified? "It depends what sort of stoning and what circumstances," he replies. "When our prophet talked about stoning for adultery he said there should be four [witnesses] - in realistic terms that's impossible. It's a metaphor for disapproval."

Stoning to death = metaphor. Welcome to Islamic math.

Excellent News for Islamists

Forecast International:

Currently only four dual EU-NATO members have military budgets that allocate the NATO minimum requisite of 2 percent of annual GDP for defense: France, the United Kingdom, Bulgaria and Romania. The latter two are the newest (and poorest) members of the EU and, while tasked with replacing their aging Soviet-era equipment for NATO-compatible ware, their budgets themselves are insufficient. Greece – typically one of the bigger defense spenders in Europe – is reining in its budget, bringing it down to 1 percent of GDP or less through 2015. Forecast International projects that, by 2011, total defense spending across the European continent will amount to just under $300 billion.

The European motto for the next decade: "You can take away our freedom but you'll never take away our handouts.

Little Respite for Serfs

Secret Dubai Diary:

The wife of an associate was somewhat disconcerted when her building watchman asked her for advice on when he should take a holiday:

"I wish to take two weeks and my wife's blood finishes on the 17th, when should I leave?"

She referred him to her husband, who was just as embarrassed. But hundreds of thousands of workers in the UAE face such a dilemma.

Getting leave every two years (or less) can make it very difficult to have a family if one fails to win the title on the home run, so to speak.

Life is harsh for third-country-national physical laborers in the Middle East.

Doctor Doom

The FBI is reaching out to Muslims -- this includes speaking to a group headed by Dr. Israr Ahmad.

In addition to hating Jews, this man thinks that the tiny Ahmadi sect in Pakistan should be declared as apostates, so that they could be Islamically killed since the punishment of apostasy is death. Forget text, there's actually video evidence; see the one-minute clip called "A confession of defeat".

All it takes is a few minutes of searching on the Internet to find the above information. Just how incompetent is the FBI?

Pakistan Not Pure Enough

The Daily Times via Gateway Pundit:

Militants seized a town in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday and hoisted their flags over buildings after security forces surrendered, AFP quoted police and residents as saying.

The town of Madyan was the third to come under the effective control of followers of firebrand religious leader Maulana Fazlullah, who is demanding Sharia law in the erstwhile tourist resort of Swat.

How did they gain control of the town?

The militants held negotiations with police and security forces, which agreed to withdraw, police and witnesses said. Police also retreated from two more police posts in nearby villages.

Good job, you cowards.

The Dark Ages in the 21st Century

AFP via Dhimmi Watch:

An Egyptian pickpocket has had his right hand cut off in Saudi Arabia for robbing visitors to Islam's holiest site, the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the official news agency SPA said.

A slight misunderstanding of peaceful Islam perhaps?

Saudi Arabia applies a strict form of sharia Islamic law, with theft committed anywhere else in the kingdom punishable by flogging and prison.

Murder, rape, drug smuggling, armed robbery, black magic, sodomy, homosexuality and apostasy carry sentences of beheading.

Maybe not.

West vs. Sharia

From a debate hosted by Dublin University's Philosophical Society last month:

Can Islam and western liberal societies co-exist, countries like France have banned traditional Muslim garb in schools, tension grows between the secularists and the Islamists in Turkey and calls for Jihad and destruction of the western ideals that we cherish ring louder.

A lovely Muslim sets things straight:

Anjem Choudary, a British-born self-styled cleric who has been investigated numerous times by the British police for his extremist pronouncements, repeated his assertion to a gathering in Trinity College, Dublin, last night that followers of Islam could not accept secular authority.

Mr Choudary said democratic, liberal states were plagued by rape, paedophilia, pornography, bestiality, drug and alcohol abuse and suicide. “When you push the boundaries of freedom and liberalism, that is the result. That is how people practice their freedom. We do not want that imported into our community.”

Another charming Islamist chimes in:

Lebanon-based Mr Mohammed, who lost his asylum status in Britain after saying the British people brought the London bombings on themselves, said Islam was a complete way of life that could not yield to any other way. “Islam is a complete system of living, the Sharia system. Islam has political beliefs — it cannot co-exist with another political belief.”

He added: “There will be strife. It could be political, it could be ideological, it could be military struggle.”

Francis W. Porretto:

There are twenty-two Islamic states in the world. In most of those states, shari'a really is the law of the land. If living under shari'a is so important to Choudary, Mohammed, and their admirers, why are they in the British Isles? Could it be that Islamic governance produces impoverished hellholes ruled by constipated octogenarian clerics, where only political insiders have a life worth living or any freedom of action?

Squeezing the Rich

Greg Mankiw:

Some are using dissatisfaction over the U.S. health care as a Trojan Horse to push for more redistribution of income. Almost all sweeping health reform proposals involve higher taxes on the rich to provide benefits for those father down the economic ladder. The redistribution, rather than health reform, is sometimes the main objective.

Yup.

Quran: A Kind of Magic

The Christian Science Monitor via Akram's Razor:

For years, Salim Haji was told by government officials and international groups that his methods of fishing were destroying the coral and weren't sustainable. But few fishermen on this small island off Tanzania's coast paid much heed.

Then, the local imam told him that using dragnets to fish and spears to catch octopuses was wrong.

As a devout Muslim, he listened.

"I've learned that the way I fished was destructive to the environment," says Mr. Haji, "This side of conservation isn't from the mzungu," he says, using the Swahili word for white man, "it's from the Koran."

Wow. Next year, the umma might get halaal pork out of the Quran.

The Alpha Dhimmis

Elder of Ziyon: Evidence of Arab collusion against Arab Jews starting in 1947.

Here we get "Excerpts of Direct Quotes of the Law drafted by the Political Committee of the Arab League".

“All Jewish citizens…will be considered as members of the Jewish minority of the State of Palestine and will have to register [“within 7 days”] with the authorities of the region wherein they reside, giving their names, the exact number of members in their families, their addresses, the names of their banks and the amounts of their deposits in these banks…”

“Bank accounts of Jews will be frozen. These funds will be utilized in part or in full to finance the movement of resistance to Zionist ambitions in Palestine.”

Arabs numbered in the tens of millions and controlled vast amounts of land which overflowed with crude. Yet, they couldn't stand to see a few million independent Jews as their neighbors on a tiny strip of oil-free real estate.

The level of intolerance is just mind-boggling.

Isn't the Iranian Regime Merciful?

From Kamangir comes this news:

In her original trial Delaram was sentenced to 2 years and ten months prison term and 20 lashings, which was reduced to 2 years and 6 months and ten lashings in a ruling issued by the appeals court announced this morning.

Her crime?

Delaram Ali was arrested in June 2006, after she attended a peaceful protest against inequality of men and women in the Iranian law.

Unbreakable

The Daily Mail:

They say twins share a strong bond - but the one between Gabriel and Ieuan Jones was unbreakable.

When doctors found that Gabriel was weaker than his brother, with an enlarged heart, and believed he was going to die in the womb, his mother Rebecca Jones had to make a heartbreaking decision.

Doctors told her his death could cause his twin brother to die too before they were born, and that it would be better to end Gabriel's suffering sooner rather than later.

The Land of the Pure in Darkness

Metroblogging Lahore:

Transmission of private channels stopped across the country.

Thank you and don't come again:

We do not require your services anymore: Chief Justice verbally informed.

Time:

The declaration of a state of emergency by Musharraf, who remains head of the army eight years after seizing power in a bloodless coup, suspended the constitution, blacked out independent television news stations and cut some phone lines. Soldiers and police patrolled parts of Islamabad, the capital.

Perpetual Economic Nightmares

Thomas Sowell writes about political "solutions" in the US. His first example is the risky subprime loans.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, where housing prices are the highest in the nation, risky interest-only loans went from being 11 percent of all new mortgages in 2002 to being 66 percent of all new mortgages in 2005.

Study after study has shown that housing prices are highest where government restrictions on building are the most severe. That is the ugly result of pretty words like "open space."

The last example only requires the understanding of a supply and demand diagram. Still, many people support the policy out of misguided compassion.

You Can Never Check Out

Johann Hari:

Imagine a woman – let’s call her Beth – who has been an unthinking atheist all her life, just because her family and her friends are too. One day, she decides to convert to Islam. As soon as she dons the hijab, her neighbours start to swear and spit at her in the street. A brick is thrown through her window; while she is sleeping, her car is torched. When she speaks out publicly, the death threats come. She is a “whore” who will be “raped to death”. All the other converts to Islam are receiving the same threats. Some have been beaten. Some are on the run. When they approach the police, they are wary-to-hostile. The officers ask suspiciously: what have you been doing to anger these Muslim-bashers?

If this was happening this way, it would – rightly – be a national scandal. There would be Panorama specials, front page fury and government inquiries into Islamophobia. But it is happening – only in the reverse direction.

Not Going All the Way

Gus Van Horn:

Prager's analogy between ethnicity and religion obscures essential differences between the two behind superficial similarities. Certainly, one's personal development can be shaped by the ethnic background or religious milieu in which he was raised by accident of birth, but of the two, it is only religion -- and not ethnicity -- that offers a comprehensive (quasi-philosophic) view of the universe and ethical guidance along with it. And the epistemological influence of religion, along with its ethical guidance shapes the political views of the adherents of a religion.

Thus Islam, unlike "German-ness" or Italian ethnicity, is a system of thought and as such, it is fair game to ask whether its premises, cognitive methods, and teachings lead to totalitarianism when applied consistently or not. And if they do, then it does not "besmirch" Islam to say so: It renders justice to Islam and invites us to examine other religions critically in turn.

Indeed.
