That kitten would be deadly cute no matter what it did, and it was cool hearing it's little voice, but why so desperate? Did they starve it or what?

I was being overly dramatic just like the kitten was.
Baby animals can be dramatic. I remember someone took a puppy to a store I worked in. It made this horrible noise and I ran into the back room thinking a machine had fallen on it and crushed it or something. But it was just puppy angst. Maybe it was calling for it's Mom who wasn't there.
