How is the direction calculated? Along a great circle or East-West? In North America it makes a big difference.

Ah, the things I don't have to worry about!
If one is in North America, then I think it's East to West.
One incident I remember from long ago: I was traveling in a plane with my family. A few Muslims got up, setup their thin rugs towards Mecca and started praying. Just moments later, the plane made a slight turn.
I mentally giggled. Oh, I was a bad Muslim.
