Slavery has always been permitted in Islam. In fact, many of the slaves the British/Americans bought in Africa were enslaved by and sold by Muslim Africans. When the Ottoman Sultan was pressured by European powers to abolish slavery, Muslim ulema protested vociferously. Not surprising, really: Islam's still stick in an age millennia ago.
