Everybody Wants a Free Lunch

Why is it that most people who report on economic matters don't even have an elementary understanding of it? When the government offers "free" education or health care or housing or what-have-you, the demand of that "free" good will rise.

I don't understand how people could still be mesmerized by this simple, rational and abundant occurrence.
