Those Tender Feelings

Indigo Jo Blogs:

The BBC have reported that a sister named Bushra Noah, who was refused a job as a hair stylist because the potential employer regarded her headscarf as being incompatible with the funky image of her salon and thought a hair stylist should have her own hair on display, has won £4,000 compensation. The compensation was for hurt feelings produced by a 15-minute interview

From now on, I'm sure, employers will have a greater incentive to hire headscraf-clad women.

The salon owner said she could not understand why someone who was against the display of hair would be in the hair industry, which strikes me as odd, because Muslims are not against the display of hair per se - just its public display.

Yeah, that would have satisfied the salon owner. "But my hair is so spectacularly beautiful ... in private."

Saving the Master

KETV via The Corner:

A Labrador retriever lived up to its name Friday when he plucked his 12-year-old owner out of the Platte River, near North Bend.

What an incredible creature.

Jake got a very big bone for efforts and was forgiven for every hole he dug and all the mud he tracked into the house, the Baileys said.

He should be forgiven for all the mud he'll bring in the future.

Be a Virgin, Again!

IHT: For Muslim women in Europe, a medical road back to virginity.

Ain't technology grand?

"In my culture, not to be a virgin is to be dirt," said the student, perched on a hospital bed as she awaited surgery Thursday. "Right now, virginity is more important to me than life."

I don't get her mindset. Why did she choose to not remain a virgin? And after having made that choice, why is she marrying within a culture and a family that would consider her true self to be dirt?

One 32-year-old Macedonian-born Muslim said that she had chosen the surgery to avoid being punished by her father after her relationship with her boyfriend of eight years ended.

"I was afraid that my father would take me to a doctor and see whether I was still a virgin," said the woman, who owns a small business and lives on her own in Frankfurt. "He told me, 'I will forgive everything, but not if you have thrown dirt on my honor.' I wasn't afraid he would kill me, but I was sure he would have beaten me."

Apparently, beating one's 32-year-old daughter is honorable behavior.

Link via Lisa Schiffren who writes out my thoughts perfectly here:

Call me a romantic, but just how great a marriage can be built on a lie about chastity, fear of exposure, and the resentment that must follow the neccessity to undergo that surgery?

The Muslim Immigrant

Achelois:

I am not pro assimilation. I support that people be seen as different parts of mosaic that together forms a beautiful piece with various colours and backgrounds. I don’t want to assimilate into a foreign culture and I don’t want to force them to assimilate into mine. I never wanted to assimilate into a Christian British culture; British culture today is so varied that there can and does exist a prominent Muslim British culture. When the colonists came to East India they did not start wearing a dhoti kurta. They did not assimilate and there is no reason why people from various ethnic backgrounds should be asked to assimilate blindly into the Western cultures. But the British were the colonists and not immigrants. There is a difference.

It seems that the last two sentences undercut the whole point of the paragraph.

Later on in the post:

In the past three months, four friends have said they have lost their spirituality. I am terrified.

Only four had the courage to come forward and admit that they refuse to be Allah's slaves. The true number is likely higher. Be very terrified!

Deadly Love

On cousin marriages in the United Arab Emirates:

a haemo-globinopathy specialist says that “many couples were going ahead with their wedding plans despite discovering they were thalassaemia carriers. “We found most of the couples coming just a few days before their wedding day. During this time, whenever you try to explain to them - there is already a sort of bond between this couple. To break this bond, in our culture, it will not be accepted easily,” he said… health officials said they were still receiving babies born with thalassaemia, adding they did not notice a drop of new cases since pre-marital genetic testing became a requirement in the UAE in 2006.

The spineless reaction of the UK government is not much different.

American Oppression

Shabana Mir:

American women need help. They are so victimized that they suffer themselves to be treated like objects and toys, desiring no change. Their false consciousness prevents them from criticizing their situation. They should aspire to be protected rather than exposed, clothed rather than stripped naked for every purchaser. They should expect to be given privacy from the hunter-male gaze.

We have to liberate them. We have to let them know that their way of life is evil at its core. Years of subjugation and conditioning have rendered them incapable of desiring something better. We have to empower them to hate their civilization, their culture, their people, their norms of gender and sex.

It's supposedly satirical.

Barefoot and Naked

Daily Mail:

On a clear day, the view from the top will take in the Middle East, North Africa and the Indian Ocean - providing you've a head for heights.

Plans for a mile-high tower in the Saudi Arabian desert have been unveiled by the billionaire owner of London's Savoy Hotel.

Austrolabe provides a prophecy from the time of Muhammad:

…Barefoot, naked, shepherds compete in building tall structures. [Sahih Muslim]

See, the building of such structures shows that the prophecy is coming true.

Two problems:

1. The people who want to construct these buildings aren't barefoot, naked, shepherds.
2. The building of "tall structures" has been going on for centuries. Given the wording, this prophecy has been coming true for all that time!

Anyway, some think that the project is a waste of money. A commenter says:

This tower is being built by a private company, Walid Ibn Talal has given money in the past to the Palestinians and to the poor in Lebanon, when Jenin was demolished by the Israelis he helped fund the rebuilding of the camp, this is why Mayor Juliani of NYC in 2001 refused his donation to help the victims of the attacks.

It's amusing how 1400-year-old garbage is treated with reverence but the true meaning of a recent event is perverted.
