Some People Never Learn

Oregon voters passed Measure 67 -- a tax increase:

The worst thing is that Measure 67 taxes gross revenue.

Great! If your Oregon business is just breaking even during these horrible economic times, then get ready to pack up and fire everyone.

I wonder what will happen to the Oregon unemployment rate? I mean, who could possibly foresee what the consequences of tax hikes in a difficult economic environment might be.

It's a mystery to me as well.

Legs Are Overrated

Not liking Avatar:

It’s a long-held stereotype (and still exists today) that disability is unnatural in people and so must be fixed or cured

The first commenter provides the logical conclusion:

Stop that medical research now! Helping people walk again is an insult to their dignity!

The Land of Pure Stupidity

Just recently Pakistan was thrashed by the Australian cricket team: 3-0. A writer for Cricinfo provides scathing commentary on the matter:

This series, in the eyes of evolution, has been man grappling ape, mobile phones battling message-carrying pigeons. Australia, even this lessened, beatable Australia, has been at least a civilization ahead of Pakistan. There is not a cricket-playing country in the world as backward and as resistant to not just modernity but simple, natural progression as Pakistan.

Ouch. The rest is blistering as well.

The Allstate/National Journal Heartland Monitor poll shows 50% say they would probably or definitely vote for someone else.

Intellectual Temptation

A great interview of Thomas Sowell at The National Review. I liked his particular take on the meaning of an intellectual.

The above link will take you to part one of the interview.

Here's:

  • Part 2
  • Part 3 (The bit about Adam Smith is hilarious. Completely agree with his take on terrorists and trials; they should have no rights.)
  • Part 4
  • Part 5

I used to read Thomas Sowell a lot. I found his writings online when I went to the US as a high school student. Later, I would check his articles on the Internet from Saudi Arabia.

Nuked

Some people have no luck (via Instapundit):

Mr. Yamaguchi, as a 29-year-old engineer for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, was on a business trip in Hiroshima when the United States dropped the first atomic bomb on the morning of Aug. 6, 1945. He was getting off a streetcar when the “Little Boy” device detonated above Hiroshima.

Mr. Yamaguchi said he was less than 2 miles away from ground zero. His eardrums were ruptured and his upper torso was burned by the blast, which destroyed most of the city’s buildings and killed 80,000 people.

Mr. Yamaguchi spent the night in a Hiroshima bomb shelter and returned to his hometown of Nagasaki the following day.

Holy $#%!

On the plus side, he did live to be 93.

An Update on Life

Three years ago I was in front of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada in Toronto. The purpose of the hearing was to determine if there was a credible threat to my life in Pakistan.

I blogged about that pivotal event here.

Late last year, I could apply for Canadian citizenship; which I did. Unfortunately, the wait time could be up to sixteen months. This is assuming that I filled out the application properly. The Canadian government will tell me in, oh, four months if there is any problem with my application.

Yes, there's a six-month-wait for finding out if there an error in the submitted documentation. It's going to be a long winter.

Update
Recently the artist who drew this cartoon was attacked.

Fatwa in 3 ... 2 ...

On Google images searching for "Muhammed" brings up my blog as the first link. Two interesting points on this:

  1. It's hilarious that a blog of an ex-Muslim gets high hits for an image of the crazy prophet.
  2. How sad that barely any news media bothered to report on one of the big stories of the year. Interested people were searching for the photos of doom! and coming up with links to ... blogs.

Just a job:

Jaime Rascone is no different than the rest of us in that the erstwhile DJ needs to grab the occasional odd job to make ends meet. But the Chilean lothario has beat all of us by holding the type of fantasy job that just sounds too good to be true: Quality Control in a brothel.

There are no words.

Do's and Don'ts for Women

Vox Popoli thinks that The Rules don't work. He presents a few of his own guidelines for women. For example:

Men don't love drama. We don't watch it, we don't read it, we don't play it, and we certainly don't want to live it. The less you can create, the better. If you crave excitement, go jump out of an airplane or find a way to test your skills against others. It works fine for us.

Amen.

Above all, don't try to be a mother. He survived without you before so he knows he can survive just fine without you now. There are plenty of girls on the girl tree and moreover, there is nothing less sexually attractive to the psychosexually normal adult male than a woman playing Mommy. Men find it aggravating, irritating, and emasculating to have a woman attempting to order them about like a child. And note that silent toleration does not indicate acceptance.

This applies to women whom one is not even dating. I tolerate many, er, motherly figures at my workplace.
